Reviewing Youth Work Practice - FYT service

Posted: 25/05/2008, 15:28

On a number of occasions FYT has been asked to review youth work practice in a number of churches/projects/agencies around the UK. These reviews have ranged from observing youth work sessions and providing feed back to youth workers through to a week long review with a written report on findings. We are pleased to provide this kind of service as it can enable a number of desired outcomes, including:

* Better youth work practice with young people
* A clear understanding of achievements with a view to ‘next steps’
* Thinking that goes ‘outside of the box’ for practice that may have become stuck and specific problem solving solutions
* Review material that might be used with management, other professionals and/or funders
* Theological reflection on youth work practice

FYT has therefore decided to make this service available on a public basis and are applying the payment terms that we operate in relation to our youth work training services (copy below).

Here are a couple of quotes from Projects that we have worked with in this way over the last year:

“Reviewing is an extremely important aspect of running a project as it enables you to really assess what are the most important aspects of the project, what is working, what isn’t, do we still have the same vision and what steps are we taking to move forward. Without reviewing the work of the project you are running I think there is danger in losing sight of your aims and goals and what your purpose is. The input we received from FYT was extremely helpful. I think it is always good to bring people in from outside who have experience and can add another perspective. Your ongoing support since than has been brilliant as it always good to speak to somebody outside of the project for support and advice.” Ellie Meale, The Haven, Norwich.

"Members of Frontier Youth Trust visited us in September having been highly recommended by another local charity that had used them in the past. The training they provided for us was second to none; however, it was their evaluation and audit of Wirral YFC that stood them apart. In just three days FYT had managed to gain a very good understanding of Wirral YFC and our 'Pro's and Cons' from many perspectives. Their insightful, honest, report and advice has been massively helpful and of great significance in our development as a professional charity." Martin, Wirral YFC

PAYMENT

FYT describes itself as a missionary community committed to justice, equality and community. People who ask us for training vary a lot in terms of resource availability and we never want finance to restrict us from helping. We are delivering training to some groups in real need, with little or no finance, and operating on a purely voluntary base in areas of high deprivation and, by contrast, have delivered to groups who have more resources, we hope that groups will examine their own means and pay for our involvement based on this.

As guidance, we offer the following suggestions:

• For an evening session (depending on travel time) a suggested figure of between £50 and £150 would be appropriate plus travel expenses.
• For a day session a suggested figure of between £150-300 would be appropriate plus travel expenses.
• Event hosts are free to set their own charges for people attending the events and pass on profits to a local project in their area.
