Let there be Light

Over Christmas the Baptist church in Chard, ran a Tree Festival, where local charities could put up a tree, collect money and people would vote for the best decorated tree. Church on the Edge entered “A tree with no Lights”. Pointless in a competition for the best dressed tree – did we win? Well no, but we came third and made our point. The project has been engaging a group of skateboarders, roller-bladers, and bikers, around trying to put pressure on the council to provide some lighting and a path for the local skate park. The young people turned FYT postcards into tree decorations, where they wrote their thoughts about the skate park that could not be used during the dark winter months or accessed due to the lack of a path, they then laminated the cards and hung them on the tree. We collected money in a roller blade, and attracted a good deal of publicity, making the front page of the local paper, who did an excellent job in highlighting the issue. One of the other groups that entered a tree was so taken with the idea that they decided to collect for our cause. The money raised is being used to make a DVD highlighting the issue to be presented to the council. The young people were keen to point out that if this was an adult facility that there would have at least been a path, and although another group of young people initially raised the money for the skate park, the group are questioning the current fashion in councils to make the young people raise the money for the this type of project, as they feel it makes no sense to have the park without adequate access or lighting.
