Bishop Roger Sainsbury - a thought about locking young people up

Posted: 14/12/2006, 16:21

A thought from Bishop Roger Sainsbury (FYT President) who writes in response to a New Statesman article by saying, "Alice O’Keeffe puts her finger on how we are treating some of our most troubled (and troublesome) young people (The War on Youth; 16 October). But it is not simply the application of a punitive, and ineffective, youth justice policy, it is also how many politicians speak of the young; how the popular press presents them; and how we fail to invest in helping them make constructive use of their leisure time. We currently spend £98 per head per annum on adolescent youth services but it costs £25,000 to incarcerate each one convicted. Wouldn’t it be better to put a fence at the top of the cliff rather than station an ambulance at the bottom?"
