Several agencies, including FYT, have come together to look at creative ways to question and challenge negative stereotypes about young people in the media. We are fed up with the generalisations and worried that these kinds of labels run the risk of becoming self fulfilling prophesies. We are also aware, from research by the Young Christian Workers, that this is an issue that many young people are also concerned about.
One of the campaigns we plan is to use a large public space to create an art installation with young people - based upon a pyramid - representing maslows hierarchy of need - which underlines our common humanity - young - old, black - white - male - female etc... (the dimensions of this structure will be in the region of 20 foot in height etc!). Alongside this we are conducting research into how adult opinions of young people are formed - we plan to launch the research alongside the installation - we hope that the PR from the pyramid will act as a 'pull' for media interest.
CAN YOU HELP - We wondered if you and the young people that you are in contact with would help us by collecting negative newspaper/magazine articles which are about young people and signing and dating them and sending them to us to include in the installation? If you are able to help please post your articles to Frontier Youth Trust, Unit 208b, The Big Peg, 120 Vyse Street, Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham, B18 6NF.
Many thanks - Dave Wiles
